Facilitation

The process of running an impartial learning session or meeting.

Facilitaton theory

Introduced by Carl Rogers, it is based on the idea that nobody can teach another person, only facilitate its learning. In his own words,

We know … that the initiation of such learning rests not upon the teaching skills of the leader, not upon his scholarly knowledge of the field, not upon his curricular planning, not upon his use of audio-visual aids, not upon the programmed learning he utilizes, not upon his lectures and presentations, not upon an abundance of books, although each of these might at one time or another be utilized as an important resource. No, the facilitation of significant learning rests upon certain attitudinal qualities which exist in the personal relationship between the facilitator and the learner.” (Rogers, C. Freedom to Learn. 1969.)

Facilitator

Someone who helps a group of people understand their common objectives and assists them to plan to achieve them without taking a particular position in the discussion.

Fair Use

Fair use is a part of Copyright law.  Copyright is a balance between the owner's right to  make money off of their intellectual property and the public's right to build off of pre-existing knowledge. Fair use is one of those balancing acts. Fair use looks at the nature and purpose of the work being created (not the original; the new work); the nature of the original work; the amount of the original work the new work uses and what part of the original work is used (for example: does it give away the main plot twist in a mystery). This usage is only considered fair if it is used in criticism, comment, reporting the news, teaching (non profit), and/or scholarship and research (US Copyright Office, 2012).

It is still a VERY slippery slope.
